In the middle of the judicial process that keeps him in prison, former film producer Harvey Weinsteinco-founder of Miramax Films, was transferred from Rikers Island prison to a Manhattan hospital after experiencing health complications.
The producer, winner of an Oscar Award for Shakespeare in Love (1998), he established himself in the Hollywood industry, where the films he produced won more than 80 Oscars. However, he later faced justice for accusations of harassment and sexual assaultcases for which he received convictions and which have been reopened as part of the appeal processes.
While he remains in prison, Weinstein’s health has been a cause of concern. It was recently reported that the 74-year-old producer was hospitalized due to a serious respiratory problem, according to media outlets such as deadline.
A spokesperson highlighted to that media that Weinstein “is resting and recovering in the hospital.” He also indicated that he will remain in a Manhattan hospital for a few weeks to remain under observation.
The first reports on his state of health indicated that he was suffering from heart failure resulting from pneumonia. According to TMZ, for this reason he was transferred to the prison unit of Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
Media like The Times They quoted the producer’s publicist, Juda Engelmayer, who confirmed that Weinstein remains in recovery at Bellevue Hospital. TMZ added that the former producer “was placed on an IV, hooked up to a heart monitor and given antibiotics to treat his pneumonia.”
Although he is improving, TMZ points out that Weinstein is not out of the woods yet. At the moment, an estimated date for his release from the hospital has not been reported, while the judicial process continues.
Harvey Weinstein’s career was cut short after accusations of sexual harassment and assault against him, which led him to face criminal charges and receive convictions in New York, in 2020, and in California, in 2022.
The process has been prolonged. As detailed Britannicahis conviction for rape in New York was overturned in 2024. Even so, after a new trial, he was convicted of a sexual crime in 2025, for which he remains imprisoned at Rikers Island.
During his stay in prison, Weinstein has had several medical complications. According to media such as Infobaehas declared suffering from “bone marrow cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia and coronary artery disease.”
In statements to The Hollywood Reporterthe producer stated last January that he did not want to die in prison: “Whatever they do, I don’t think I did anything bad enough to deserve the death penalty. I’m going to be 74 in March. I don’t want to die here.” For this reason, he has sought the revocation of the sentences handed down against him.
