By next August, the Autonomous Sports Confederation of Guatemala (CDAG) has programmed start officially the bidding process for the five projects that make up the renovation of the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium.
This process will be launched after completing the diagnosis phase and receiving proposals from national and international companies interested in participating as bidders.
CDAG representatives detailed the specific components of each of the five bidding eventsthis Tuesday, July 7, during a summons in the Congress of the Republic.
Among the distribution of resources, five areas are prioritized:
- Rehabilitation of the athletics track: This component seeks the comprehensive rehabilitation of the track, in order for it to comply with international safety standards. World Athletics. The project not only focuses on the sports surface, but also incorporates modern safety and accessibility criteria for users.
- Modernization of the soccer field: The bidding event for the field includes the installation of a state-of-the-art hybrid grass. In addition, the project includes a new irrigation system that meets the professional standards required for this type of highly competitive surfaces.
- Acquisition of seats and maintenance: The purchase of a total of 27 thousand seats will be put out to tender. The distribution of this lot consists of 25,500 units that will be permanently installed in the stadium stands and 1,500 that will be reserved for maintenance work, which will allow quick replacements in the event of any future damage, without losing the uniformity of the design.
- LED lighting system: This component consists of the modernization of the entire lighting system of the venue. The objective is to install luminaires with LED technology that reach the lighting levels required by FIFA.
- Specialized machinery for grass: The last bidding event corresponds to the acquisition of specialized machinery. This equipment is essential for the preventive and corrective maintenance of the new hybrid grass, in order to guarantee the durability and quality of the playing field in the long term.
Schedule and execution
At the end of this month, according to the CDAG, the specialized technical diagnoses that will serve as a basis for the tenders should be completed.
In August 2026, the bidding competition for the five parallel events will be opened. It is expected that in January 2027 contracts will be awarded and that in In February 2027, the physical execution of the works will begin.
Finally, in September 2027 the goal is to deliver the completely renovated stadium.
This process is managed through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which is in charge of technical structuring and transparency in the contracting of suppliers. The cost of the remodeling is estimated to exceed Q63.6 million.
Comptroller’s Complaint
The renovation project was subject to a complaint filed for the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC)last April, before the Public Ministry, when pointing out alleged failures in the first public bidding process, after the process remained unfinished when Q9.5 million had already been disbursed and the work presented a preview of only 29%.
The complaint, which includes the audit carried out by the Comptroller’s Office, exposed a series of failures, such as omissions in technical criteria to evaluate the experience of bidders, as well as other guarantees related to the ability to supply and use specialized materials.
