Rectors elect Miquel Cortés from the URL as president of the candidate for comptroller

The Rectors Forum elected Miquel Cortés, rector of the Rafael Landívar University (URL), as president of the Nomination Commission for Comptroller General of Accounts.

The decision was adopted unanimously and with this the direction of the last of the public office replacement processes for this year is defined.

The president of the postulator will work with the 13 deans of the economic faculties of the universities; and with the 13 professionals selected by the professional associations of public accounting, auditing and economists.

The objective of the nomination commission is to call the candidates for the position, evaluate their profiles, qualify them and finally, prepare a list of six candidates so that the plenary session of Congress can elect the comptroller for the period 2026-2030.

The session of the Rectors’ Forum began at 11:14 a.m., after deputy Luis Contreras, president of Congress, gave the Congress facilities to the academics to hold their assembly.

The meeting, as agreed by the Rectors’ Forum on July 10, took place publicly in the Legislative Palace, allowing the presence of observers and the media.

“The decision is of utmost importance for the country’s institutions, it is up to us to choose who will chair the nomination commission with independence and impartiality,” said Fidel Reyes Lee, rector of the Rural University and current president of the Rectors’ Forum, who is also a deputy of the National Goods bloc (Good).

The candidates

Reyes Lee, after remembering the dynamics of the vote and verifying the minimum attendance of nine votes, opened the space for proposals, giving the floor to rector Mynor Cordón, rector of Universidad Regional.

The academic explained that we have the responsibility of looking for a president who is “a lover of justice, firm and honest,” qualities that Father Miquel Cortés, rector of the Rafael Landívar University (URL), maintains.

Rector Raúl Arévalo, rector of Universidad Internaciones, supported the candidacy of Cortés, who accepted to be a candidate for the nomination committee for Comptroller General of Accounts.

Mynor Herrera, rector of the Universidad Panamericana, also proposed Roberto Moreno, rector of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG), a proposal that was seconded by the University of the West; but Rector Moreno chose not to accept the candidacy, leaving only one candidate.

Now the elected president of the nomination commission must wait for the election of the remaining commissioners of the professional associations and the swearing-in of Congress, to subsequently convene and coordinate the renewal process of the CGC.
