At least 15 people were injured, five of them seriously, after a public transportation bus overturned this Sunday, July 19, at kilometer 127 of the CA-2 Oeste route, in the jurisdiction of Río Bravo, Suchitepéquez.
The accident occurred in a sector known as La Lavadora, a point where traffic events are frequently recorded, according to local sources.
The five passengers with the most serious injuries were rushed to the National Hospital of Tiquisate, Escuintla, while the rest received care at the scene, the emergency services reported.
According to versions collected at the scene of the accident, the bus was traveling at excessive speed when a rear tire exploded. The driver lost control of the vehicle, left the road and overturned on the side of the road.
The strong impact left several passengers trapped between the seats, so the intervention of the Volunteer Firefighters and the Departmental Municipal Firefighters was necessary to rescue them and provide them with pre-hospital care.
The Volunteer Firefighters reported that five people had possible fractures and other serious injuries, for which they were transferred to the National Hospital of Tiquisate.
The accident also affected vehicular traffic on the route to the Pacific. Agents from the General Directorate of Road Protection and Safety (Provial) regulated traffic, because the right lane heading north remained obstructed by the accident bus, which caused lines of vehicles.
Provial reported through its official channels that brigades were attending to the traffic incident at kilometer 127 of the CA-2 Oeste route and recommended that motorists drive with caution and follow the instructions of the personnel stationed at the scene.
