The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) reported this Monday, July 20, about an increase in seismic activity in the limits of the departments of Guatemala and Sacatepéquez, where in the last 24 hours it has registered more than a hundred low magnitude events.
The report was issued three days after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in southern Mexico, was sensitive in Guatemalan territory, although the Insivumeh bulletin does not establish a relationship between both phenomena.
According to the seismological bulletin, between July 18 and 20, an increase in seismic activity was observed in that region of the country. The report specifies that the movements recorded have been of low magnitude.
To date, the largest earthquake reached a magnitude of 2.8while the youngest was 0.9.
The Insivumeh indicated that it has associated 108 events to this increase in activity, of which one was reported as sensitive to the institution. However, he warned that, due to the characteristics of these movements, it is possible that more people have perceived them in nearby towns, although they have not been officially reported.
“In the last 24 hours, an increase in seismic activity has been observed on the border between the departments of Guatemala and Sacatepéquez. Until now, the activity has been of low magnitudes, with 2.8 being the highest magnitude recorded and 0.9 the lowest. 108 events have been associated with this increase in activity, of which one has been reported sensitive to Insivumeh. However, due to its characteristics, it is possible that more events have been perceived by nearby populations,” says the newsletter.
The institution added that it maintains permanent monitoring of relevant seismic activity in the national territory.
