Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva was linked to criminal proceedings for the crime of patricide and sent to preventive detention under isolation by resolution of the judge on duty Carol Patricia Flores, who heard this Wednesday, July 22, the first statement hearing, in which the Public Ministry accused him of having stabbed to death his father, Jorge David Calvo Drago, 71 years old, former vice minister of Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The diligence began amidst incidents. Before the start of the hearing, Judge Carol Patricia Flores asked the media to move away from the jail area, because the defendant refused to leave to appear before the court.

Once he was transferred to the courtroom, Calvo Leiva showed a violent attitude, so the judge ordered that double shackles and an additional chain be placed on him as a security measure. In addition, he ordered that he remain surrounded by agents of the Penitentiary System throughout the procedure.

The hearing had been suspended over the weekend, after the defense reported that the accused was receiving psychiatric treatment. For this reason, the judge ordered the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) to carry out the corresponding evaluations to establish whether he was in a position to face criminal proceedings.

When the proceedings resumed, the judge explained that one of the medical reports established that the patient was in a stable state of health at the time of the evaluation, although she noted that it was not possible to issue a conclusion on the requested aspects without a specialized psychiatric assessment.

Subsequently, he read the opinion prepared by the Inacif psychiatrist, which concluded that Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva was in the use of his mental faculties and had the capacity to understand the facts attributed to him by the Public Ministry, so he decided to continue with the first statement hearing.

The judge also indicated that, according to what was recorded during the psychiatric evaluation, both the accused and his father had consumed alcoholic beverages before the events.

Based on these results, the Public Ministry formulated the accusation for the crime of patricide.

The prosecutor in the case stated that in the early morning of July 18, 2026, after an argument with his father, Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva allegedly used several kitchen knives to attack him in different parts of his body, causing wounds that caused his death.

After listening to the parties, Judge Carol Patricia Flores decided to link Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva to criminal proceedings for the crime of patricide and ordered that he remain in preventive detention while the Public Ministry continues the investigation.

Initially he was sent to the Preventive Center in zone 18, but it will be requested that he later be confined to the Matamoros Barracks Jail, where he must be under isolation. It turned out that the defendant’s defense lawyers resigned from continuing in the process.

Jorge David Calvo Drago was a professional, teacher and consultant. In 2015 he was appointed Vice Minister of Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Energy and Mines during the transitional government of Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre.
