Home Business Executive refines measures for the increase in fuel prices while diesel exceeds Q43 per gallon

The Government will announce in the coming days the measures it will adopt to confront the increase in fuel prices, President Bernardo Arévalo reported this Tuesday, July 22, who attributed the increase to the behavior of the international market derived from the conflict in the Middle East.

The president explained that the Executive holds technical meetings to evaluate the evolution of the price of diesel and gasoline before defining the actions to be implemented.

“In the coming days we will be seeing what measures we can take,” Arévalo said during a work tour in Quetzaltenango.

The president indicated that the increase in prices does not respond to internal factors, but to the impact that tensions and war actions in the Middle East have had on international hydrocarbon trade.

He recalled that just a week ago the markets showed a downward trend due to expectations of a decrease in the conflict; However, the resumption of hostilities once again boosted international prices for oil and its derivatives.

Executive maintains monitoring

Arévalo pointed out that the Government is developing a permanent analysis to determine if the increase will be temporary or if it could be prolonged, with the purpose of defining the most appropriate measures to mitigate its effects on the national economy.

He added that the responsible institutions constantly monitor the behavior of the international market and evaluate different scenarios before making a decision.

Due to the above, the president called a press conference for the Friday, July 24, at 3 p.m.when he will announce the actions that the Executive plans to implement.

Prices exceed Q43 per gallon

According to monitoring by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), average fuel prices in the metropolitan area continue to rise.

The top gallon of gasoline is priced on average at Q41.07 in self-service mode and Q42.10 in full service.

Regular gasoline registers an average price of Q40.07 in self-service and Q41.08 in full service.

Diesel reaches Q42.26 per gallon in self-service and Q43.19 in full service.

Rise sparks protests

The increase in fuel prices has motivated protests in different parts of the country, including demonstrations with road blockades, whose participants demand actions to reduce the impact of the increase in the costs of transportation and other economic activities.

The Government has not detailed the measures it is evaluating, although the president assured that the decisions will be announced once the technical analysis on the evolution of international prices is concluded.
