Guatemala successfully began its participation in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026 thanks to the gold medal won by María Alejandra Higueros in the women’s freestyle poomsae final. The Guatemalan won with a score of 8,530 and gave the country its first medal in the competition.
César Aguilar added the second medal for Guatemala at the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 by winning bronze in the men’s individual freestyle poomsae final in what was another outstanding performance by chapín taekwondo that continues to be the great letter of introduction of the national delegation in this edition.
The victory allowed Guatemala to be among the first places in the general medal table of the fairs, which are held from July 24 to August 8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with the participation of more than 6,000 athletes of 37 delegations in 40 sports.
Mexico leads the medal table, followed by Venezuela and Cuba. Guatemala leads the Central American delegations thanks to Higueros’ gold and will seek to expand its medal haul in the finals scheduled for this Saturday in disciplines such as rowing, field tennis, open water, cycling, golf and equestrian.
The Competition is just beginning. This same Saturday, Alejandra Higueros will return to the tatami to compete in the mixed freestyle poomsae final, where she will seek to win her second gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026.
If she achieves this, the taekwondo player would sign a historic double for Guatemala and would continue to consolidate herself as one of the top figures of the national delegation in this edition of the tournaments.
