The Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) of Villa Nueva reported on a caravan of heavy transport that is moving along the route to the Pacific towards the capital, in protest against the price of fuel.
Henry Quevedo, spokesperson for the PMT, indicated that the caravan began at kilometer 22 of that route and is scheduled to end at the perimeter of the Congress of the Republic.
He stressed that the demonstration affects the mobility of hundreds of motorists heading from the south towards Guatemala City.
He added that the caravan is advancing slowly and that, as it approaches the capital, “there will be serious complications in vehicular mobility.”
He warned that, when it moves through the Villalobos rise, the impact on traffic will be greater.
He added that, when the caravan circulates on the Raúl Aguilar Batres road, the complications will extend to the exit of the Wholesale Central and will affect the mobility of the Transmetro.
The vehicles in the caravan occupy all the lanes heading towards the capital, which complicates traffic.
Amílcar Montejo, road spokesman for the capital’s PMT, reported that the protesters will head towards the Historic Center in rejection of the fuel increase.
Alternate routes
Montejo suggested the following alternate routes:
- Section from Bárcenas, Villa Nueva, towards Milpas Altas and then join the CA-1 West route.
- Section from Amatitlán to the private highway in the United Nations sector and, from that same sector, to the CA-1 Oriente route.
