Arévalo seeks support from Congress for fuel subsidies and Port Law

The members of the Congress Board of Directors are summoned to a meeting with President Bernardo Arévalo to address different matters of interest to the Executive Body.

A congressional source confirmed to Free press that the meeting between the president and the members of the Board of Directors is scheduled for 12 noon this Tuesday. According to him, the issues that will be addressed with the president will be the Ports Law, the Riel Metro and the proposed law for the new fuel subsidy.

As indicated, the members of the Board of Directors were invited to the meeting with the president to address these priority issues for the Executive, mainly the subsidy that was announced last Friday by President Bernardo Arévalo and authorities of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

Last Monday, the members of the official bloc elected by the Semilla Movement presented the bill through which they seek to implement economic support of Q12.00 per gallon of diesel and Q3.00 per gallon of regular gasoline. For this purpose, the Executive would allocate Q3,480 million to implement the subsidy from August to December of this year.

Regarding the Ports Law, contained in initiative 6541, Its approval is still pending by the Legislature. This proposal is promoted by the Executive Agency with the objective of modernizing the maritime network. The proposal is pending to be known in its final wording and by articles in the chamber, and was pending approval by the congressmen during the first special period of sessions.

Regarding the Riel Metro, the Executive has indicated that it is a priority, since it constitutes one of the main projects to improve the mobility of citizens in the urban area of ​​the capital. A few weeks ago, the Executive signed the corresponding agreement with the United Kingdom for the financing of this project. The cooperation that the international partner will provide to the country will be up to 5 billion pounds sterling, about Q51 billion.

Preliminarily, it was reported that the objective of the meeting between the Board of Directors and the president is that, in the extraordinary session that will be held this Wednesday, the fuel subsidy initiative is approved as a national emergency and that the Ports Law can finally be approved by Congress.
