The Disciplinary Commission of the Fifa opened a procedure against the Argentine Football Association (AFA), several players from the Argentine national team and the Spanish Gavi, for the incidents that occurred at the end of the 2026 World Cup final. at MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, United States.
According to the organization, based on the report of the designated ethics instructor, the process involves the Argentine soccer players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, as well as the member of the coaching staff Roberto Fabián Ayala.
Likewise, a procedure was also opened against the Spanish footballer Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, Gavi. In the case of the AFA, the Disciplinary Commission investigates possible breaches of article 13 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code, for “using a sporting event to carry out demonstrations of a nature other than sporting events”; of article 14, for “inappropriate conduct”; of article 15, for “discrimination and racist attacks”, and article 17, related to order and security at matches.
Regarding article 17, the investigation includes alleged “discriminatory chants and gestures, delays in the start of matches, non-compliance with match and security protocols, display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators, and throwing of objects by spectators in several matches of the Argentine team.”
Regarding the players and members of the coaching staff, Nahuel Molina is being investigated for two counts of assault – one completed and one attempted – as well as one for unsportsmanlike conduct. Leandro Paredes faces three charges of assault, while Thiago Almada is investigated for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The technical assistant Roberto Fabián Ayala is also investigated for a charge of assault. On behalf of Spain, Gavi is investigated for alleged unsportsmanlike conduct. Those involved will have the opportunity to present their defenses before the Fifa Disciplinary Commission issues a resolution.
