This initiative seeks to respond to the alarming reality of chronic malnutrition, which affects 46.5% of the population in Guatemala and reaches 67% in this community, especially impacting early childhood development.
Nourishing life adds to Walmart’s ESG initiatives aligned with its community pillar that seeks to positively impact the localities where it operates, mainly with its commitment to combat malnutrition in the country. For its part, the Mission of United Way Guatemala to promote community development and sustainable nutrition is manifested with the articulation and support of the private sector with this project.
“We are aware that food security is a challenge that affects the entire country, particularly in the most vulnerable communities. With this project, we seek to provide immediate and sustainable support and solutions that support families in Olopa, Chiquimula to improve their quality of life, ”argued Mey Hung, deputy director of Walmart Corporate Affairs.
With funds for Walmart and execution led by United Way Guatemala, the project includes the preparation of 70 kits with basic foods and the construction of family orchards in collaboration with the beneficiary families, tasks that will be intervened by the corporate volunteer group of both entities .

Advanced agricultural technologies and sustainable methods of safe water consumption by purifying filters will also be implemented. During this first phase, 70 family models of high agricultural production and 7 sustainability modules will be installed, with the aim of strengthening food and nutritional security in a lasting way
“With nourishing life, we are establishing an intervention model that not only provides essential resources such as food and safe water, but also encourages a long -term transformation through education and community empowerment, especially in women,” he said Belia Meneses, executive director of United Way Guatemala.

The expected impact of this first phase will directly benefit more than 350 people, significantly improving nutrition and quality of life; At the same time spreading the knowledge and skills acquired towards the community, multiplying the benefits of the long -term project and generating a positive and sustainable impact on the region.
Phase II, scheduled for the next year, will expand these initiatives to self -Affurience programs, school breakfasts and reforestation projects, consolidating this year’s efforts and ensuring long -term sustainability.
