The Ministry of Social Communication of the Presidency reported in a statement this Thursday, May 22 regarding the situation of Lucrecia Peinado, wife of President Bernardo Arévalo.
This communication was shared on social networks after the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, indicated at a press conference that Hajed is exiled in Mexico for “fear of a corrupt prosecutor’s office.”
“We trust that any recently generated confusion will be overcome with the truth and transparency that characterizes the Government of Guatemala and the first lady of the nation,” says Presidency.
“The first lady of the nation, Dr. Lucrecia Peinado, is fulfilling a previously established agenda, which combines official – international activities – with personal and family activities,” according to the Presidency.
He said that since the end of 2024 and the beginning of this 2025, the president’s wife has received various invitations that, after a prioritization process, “have taken it and will still take it in the coming weeks to participate in at least three international activities.”
“These include the accompaniment of the President of the Republic, Bernardo Arévalo, as well as their participation in work spaces with their counterparts and gentlemen from other countries,” according to the presidency.
“Within the framework of this planning, the first lady began her trip with a family visit to Mexico. Subsequently, she participated in the recent meeting of first ladies in the Republic of Panama, giving continuity to her voluntary work with the commitment she has demonstrated through her different interventions,” added communication.
He announced that in the next few days, Peinado will accompany President Arévalo on an official tour of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Japan. During his return, he will attend a meeting with other first ladies and gentlemen, in monitoring an international collaborative work process initiated since 2024.
Finally, before his return to Guatemala, he will make a family visit that has been carried out annually for several years to his youngest son and his family, residents in Europe, says Presidency.
“International official activities are part of the exercise of soft diplomacy that the first lady has been performing since 2024, in favor of high impact social interventions,” according to the Presidency.
Foreign Ministry are in communication
The Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency, Santiago Palomo, at a press conference at the National Palace this Thursday assured that the Executive does not know the source of the statements of the President of Costa Rica, which states that the president’s wife is exiled in Mexico.
Palomo added that the Foreign Ministry are already in communication and that they do not know if there is any investigation or judicial process against the first lady.
