The countdown has started for the premiere of the third and last season of The squid gamewhich will arrive at the Netflix platform on June 27thus closing the history of player 456 within the popular Korean series.
During the recent presentation of this season in London, one of the actors revealed that the final script, written by director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, could be interpreted as a new beginning for the franchise.
It was the actor Lee Byung-Hun, known for playing the leader of the black mask, who said: “The director Hwang continues to say that it is an end, but when I read the script for the first time, I thought it could be an end and, at the same time, a new beginning.”
Given these statements, the director expressed his intention to close this cycle, although without completely ruling out the possibility of resuming it in the future. “For more than six years I dedicated myself to writing and directing this series. It’s time to say goodbye. It’s time to move on to my next project,” Hwang reflected.
In an interview with The Playlistthe creator also said that the outcome of this season will overflow emotions, although he will not have a conventionally happy end. “It’s half and half. Sad final half, half happy ending. It’s just in the middle. Do you know what I mean? When they see the final episode, they will understand it,” he said.
The third season has generated expectation not only for continuing the history of the second installment, but also for the promotional message used by Netflix: “It’s time to play a last time.” The new installment promises to introduce new games and maintain the tension that characterized the first season, according to the cast.
Composed of six episodes, this season was described by the director as “crazy”, while promising a return to the origins of the series, ensuring that all the questions that were pending will be answered.
For Hwang, the series functions as an allegory of contemporary social inequality. “The wealth gap has only worsened. Even between the first and second season, everything worsened,” he said in statements cited by Meristation.
As detailed by the creator in an interview with The Playlist“So many things have happened between 2009 and 2019, and, worldwide, the wealth gap has only aggravated itself, which has plunged many more people in such great suffering and struggle.”
Hwang explained that, in the development of the series, it is observed how world wealth continues to concentrate on the same 1% of the population, which, in their opinion, requires urgent reflection. One of the objectives of the series, he said, is precisely to denounce that inequality.
The creator considers that this was one of the key factors of the success of the plot, since the public continues to observe how “the so -called technological companies, the technological giants that manufacture artificial intelligence, semiconductors and others, will continue to concentrate all the world wealth in them, and even more,” he reflected.
What will be the director’s next project?
One of the revelations left by the director during the presentation in London was his new film project: a film entitled Ko Clubwith which he seeks to start a new stage in his career.
Hwang Dong-Hyuk explained that this new story will recreate, brutally and raw, a scenario that-according to him-could materialize in one or two decades if humanity does not modify its social course. The advance left the public before his next production.
