The arrests of American citizens of Latin origin during migratory raids in Los Angeles, which included a pregnant woman who gave birth before the expected date, have fed the accusations against federal agents for the alleged use of the racial profile.
After fourteen days of continuous operations of the immigration and customs control service (ICE) in Los Angeles, hundreds of people have been arrested. However, not all are undocumented immigrants. Activists and defenders of migrants denounce that among those arrested there are countless Latinos born in the US.
“This is chaos,” said Angélica Salas, director of the Immigrant Human Rights Coalition (Chirla). “American citizens are being arrested and disappeared by their skin color,” he said.
They chain pregnant
That would be the case of Cary López Alvarado, a nine -month pregnant woman, who was arrested by masked federal agents on June 8 in the Hawthorne area, along with her son’s father, Brayan Nájera, and her cousin Alberto Sandoval, the latter also US citizen.
Despite her protests, the 23 -year -old was taken along with her partner and her cousin to a border patrol processing center, where, according to her, the agents automatically assumed that she was undocumented, according to Ktla.
“They said: ‘But you are from Mexico, right?’
López was chained with hands and feet. He said he felt that the chains exerted too much pressure on his belly and had to maneuver so as not to harm.
She was released after complaining from Dolores and transferred directly to a hospital, where she began to have contractions.
Four days later, the woman gave birth to a healthy girl who has not met her father, because she was sent to a migratory detention center in Texas.
The lawyer Luis Carrillo, who represents López, described as “outrageous and heartbreaking” the arrest of the American citizen.
“This increase in force by federal agents was totally unnecessary and could have caused a spontaneous abortion to our client due to the stress of the incident,” said the jurist.
López’s anguish continues, since Nájera was the family’s supplier. In addition, the immigrant, originally from Guatemala, was transferred to a distant state, which complicates its access to adequate legal representation to remain in the country.
Walmart worker outrage
The allegations of American citizens of Latin origin have multiplied with the advancement of the operation in Los Angeles, which, according to the Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, could last up to 60 days.
This Tuesday, about a thousand residents of Pico Rivera, an eminently Latin area, demonstrated in a shopping center to protest the treatment received by Adrián Andrew Martínez, 20, Walmart worker.
The young man was arrested after a violent physical confrontation with about half a dozen federal agents who interrogated another employee.
Witness videos show how Martínez was held by the neck by one of the officers and then violently thrown to the ground, although several people assured that he was an American citizen and employee of the store.
Steve Carmona, administrator of Pico Rivera, told the media that “he was very worried” about what was happening with the residents due to migratory raids.
“I have my passport”
A similar scene occurred last Thursday in Montebello, neighboring city of Pico Rivera, when Javier Ramírez was arrested outside his business.
“I have my passport! I have my identification! I am an American citizen!” The man exclaimed while arrested, according to a video of the incident that has gone viral.
Ramírez was arrested by the immigration authorities with one of his employees.
In all three cases, federal authorities have argued that citizens were arrested for obstructing the actions of ICE agents.
