How language molds our mental health, according to psychology

The word has power, and in mental health it comes to influence. Psychologists emphasize that the way of speaking to others or itself can have a high impact on the human psyche, which can influence people’s emotional and physical health, since words shape the mind and determine how it acts before the negative.

Daniella Feterman, a holistic psychologist, emphasizes that words not only communicate: they also create internal realities that can regulate emotions and personality.

“What we say and how we say it can contain or overwhelm us, you can approach or isolate us, you can relieve or hurt,” he says, so he considers it necessary to learn to communicate with others and with himself.

The expert emphasizes that words have a special power in internal conversations, since they are able to mold acts and efforts. He explains that consciously choosing words can be an act of self -care and empathy towards others.

It should be understood that language is born, in most cases, from an internal perspective: a compendium of beliefs, emotions, wounds and values.

“The words with which we talk about the world and of ourselves are like a window to our internal world. Sometimes we speak from fear, sometimes from love, defense or the need for connection. Therefore, paying attention to how we express ourselves is not just an act of external communication: it is also an exercise of self -knowledge,” says Feterman.

For the expert, it is important that people understand that the way they communicate with themselves can make the difference between sustaining or sabotage.

“Your internal dialogue is the voice that you hear the most in the whole day. If it is a voice that judges, minimizes or presses, you probably feel exhausted, confused or disconnected. But if it is a voice that contains, understands and validates, then it becomes a powerful resource to regulate you emotionally, to make decisions more clarity and feel more in peace,” he added.

For its part, Ximena Fuentes, clinical psychologist and couple therapist, indicates that the way a person expresses directly influences their mental health, both in their internal emotions and in their relationships with others.

Sources details that this influence is manifested on several levels: physiological, emotional, cognitive and social.

The tone of voice also impacts emotional health

  • A calm and leisurely tone helps reduce anxiety and tension. When using a serene voice, the nervous system also reassures.
  • An aggressive or high tone increases stress, promotes conflicts and activates the alert system, raising cortisol levels.
  • Internal dialogue also matters. The tone that is used when speaking with them directly influences the mood. An critical or severe internal voice can reinforce negative thoughts.

The impact of language on mental health

  • Positive and compassionate language favors self -esteem and resilience. Expressions such as “I am learning” instead of “I am a failure” generate a more constructive attitude.
  • The use of negative or absolute language, as “I never do anything well,” reinforces cognitive distortions that affect emotional well -being.
  • Body language complements the verbal. A congruent expression – as posture and face – strengthens emotional connection and transmits authenticity.

Emotional openness and psychological well -being

  • Expressing feelings and vulnerability helps reduce emotional load and prevents the accumulation of stress or anxiety.
  • Suppressing emotions is associated with symptoms of depression, somatization and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
  • The ability to verbalize what feels strengthens emotional self -regulation and favors better mental health.

Ximena Fuentes indicates that language has the power to shape thought and protect mental health, since various cognitive theories argue that it influences the way of thinking. Using words to describe experiences helps process them and understand them.

“Expressing in positive or negative terms not only reflects the emotional state, but can also reinforce it. Modifying language is a way to transform the perception of reality,” he said.

Having assertive and empathic communication strengthens social ties, which represents a key protective factor for mental health. On the contrary, the lack of communicative skills can lead to isolation, misunderstandings or conflicts, increasing the risk of suffering from anxiety or depression.
