One of the elevators recently enabled at the La Aurora International Airport was out of service on Saturday, July 5, after a group of people was caught by reasons not revealed by the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC).

In a statement, the DGAC reported that the elevator “stopped”, which affected the mobility of some users. “Before the emergency, the security protocol and the airport staff were immediately activated, executed the necessary actions to resolve the situation in a few minutes,” said the entity.

Due to the confusion and nervousness of the moment, some people alerted the relief bodies and the National Civil Police (PNC).

According to the DGAC, “the tension generated by the people who were inside the elevator caused that, at the time of opening the doors, they were damaged, which has left the team disabled.”

The authorities indicated that the private company responsible for the service is legally obliged to provide maintenance for a minimum period of three years and to guarantee the operation of the equipment in accordance with the provisions of the law.

New teams

On February 6, 2025 it was announced that the elevators and electric stairs of La Aurora airport were already in operation. According to the DGAC, the authorization was carried out after complying with the processes established in the State Contracting Law.

“As of today the elevators and electric stairs of La Aurora airport are enabled for the service of all users,” the DGAC said on that occasion.

The authorization took place after several months in which the current administration reported that it managed the installation, although legal impediments hindered its completion.

The Administration faces requirements by users and tourist sectors that require improvements in the country’s main air terminal.

Another pending solution is the operation of the air conditioning system, which also faces administrative and legal difficulties.
