Several departments of Guatemala will experience extreme heats during March, which could even raise the thermometer to 38 degrees Celsius, according to a projection of the National Sismology Institute, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh).

According to a map of Insivumeh, the warmer regions expected are the Pacific, Bocacosta and valleys of the East, where the maximum temperatures range between 30 and 38 degrees Celsius, on average.

According to the projections, Zacapa will register temperatures between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, although it could rise to 38 degrees.

Puerto San José, Escuintla, and the head of Retalhuleu will register temperatures between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius, followed by Champerico, Retalhuleu, with 33 to 34 degrees and Escuintla head with 27 and 33 degrees.

Recommendations

Given the behavior of temperatures, Insivumeh recommends that government and non -governmental institutions take into account the information provided for the planning and execution of their activities.

The risk management sector recommends preventing the population about the possibility of high temperatures, especially in the North, Caribbean regions, East Valleys, Bocacosta and Pacifico.

The health sector asks to disseminate information and recommendations to the population to avoid complications for heat.

The general population is asked to stay hydrated and protect themselves from the sun’s rays, especially between 11 and 16 hours, because at this time the temperature maximums are usually reached in the day and the ultraviolet rays are stronger.

The Ministry of Agriculture is asked to issue timely recommendations to strengthen and prevent the agricultural sector from weather and climatic conditions.

The environmental sector is called to be careful due to the conditions that can favor the proliferation and spread of forest fires, due to low soil moisture and the high temperatures that are expected in the regions of the central highlands, valleys of the East and in the south of the country.

To all sectors it is recommended to follow up on climatic, meteorological, seismic, vulcanological and hydrological bulletins issued by Insivumeh.
