Urban criteria
High size projects for all
When we see the vast majority of cities in the world, they all have not only peripheral rings that circumvent their perimeter, but many of them have two and up to three concentric road circles with more than four to eight lanes, which allow mobility to be much more effective.
Metropolitan rings contribute to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants, reducing the stress associated with traffic in urban areas; They improve road safety by separating urban traffic load traffic and facilitating access to different areas of the Metropolitan Region. These infrastructure projects have multiple positive impacts on mobility, territorial planning, economy and the quality of life of the inhabitants of the metropolitan areas.
These efforts, to generate comprehensive urban planning that allows trade, tourism, industry and services to better mobility, are what the Guatemalan government must resume all sections of the C-50 regional ring. According to information published by Free press More than a year ago, “The C-50 Regional Ring, Eastern Arco, consists of eight sections, with an approximate of 200 kilometers that will be expanded to four lanes. Until now, three sections have been awarded, but the lack of financial availability stopped the execution of two projects. ” Today, what we see is very different. The C-50 regional ring has serious execution problems and is probably a project that we do not see, at least in the next 15 years if we continue with the same priority that has been given in the last three governments.
The only stretch that already has certain advances is section 8 of Guanagazapa to Escuintla, but with serious complications for different processes that must still be completed and a lack of assigned budget to be able to conclude the project.
This is perhaps the most important government project regarding strategic infrastructure.
This lack of continuity of high major projects in our country is what has a serious involvement on the traffic of the city of Guatemala, because all heavy traffic has to cross the urban area.
This is perhaps the most important project of the Government in the field of strategic infrastructure, not only to really take advantage of the investment opportunities that the Nearshoring It can give to our country, for the number of industrial parks that are being generated on the southern coast and that need a more expedited route to reach the ports in the Atlantic, but because of the advantages that such a project would give to all the inhabitants of the metropolitan area of the city of Guatemala and the reduction of heavy transport by crossing it.
If the government of President Arévalo wants to leave a legacy, he must execute the budget assigned to this project and at least some of the eight sections are finished so far from his administration to continue advancing with the project and that, at least, in 15 years we have this project so important for the country.
Starting to plan rings that circumvent the different intermediate cities is something that should already be a priority, if we want to think of sustainable cities where logistics can be exploited and that urban development is a propositive factor towards prosperity and the generation of value in the country. It is time for the Government of Guatemala to take strategic projects for the benefit of the population, that foster an improvement in logistics and accelerate mobility in the country.
