With solemnity and fervor, the streets and avenues of the Historic Center are transformed during the third weekend of Lent. Devotees, Cucuruchos, Ephemeral art teachers and brotherhoods give life to one of the most emblematic religious and cultural manifestations in the country, while advancing towards the expected celebration of Holy Week.
In this time of penance and reflection, the faithful loaders find in Lent A spiritual opportunity to approach God, raising prayers while carrying the processional and the sacred images of Jesus on their shoulders, in a tradition that preserves the religious and cultural legacy of the Guatemalan people.
The city of Guatemala and Antigua Guatemala will be the scene of the first processional tours that make Lent in the country unique, an expression of faith that has contributed to Holy Week being recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
With the progress of liturgical time, from children to older adults they are integrated into the activities scheduled for March, month in which more than 30 processions corresponding to this period of devotion are planned.

Processional tours of the third weekend of Lent
During this weekend, children will load on their shoulders the images of Jesus Nazareno and the Virgin of Dolores, while penitent and devotees of the Christ of Esquipulas will solemnity the streets of the Historic Center on March 22 and 23, on the eve of reaching half of the Lenten Time.

Children’s procession of the third Saturday of Lent
Taking the child’s procession of the beautiful blood and Our Lady of Dolores of the Temple of San Francisco, children with a cultural legacy will tour the streets on the third Saturday of Lent, as has been carried out since 2016.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Don Bosco
Taken up by the Salesian community, the restored image of Jesús Nazareno de la Paz and the Virgin of Dolores will travel the streets this Saturday, as tradition has been done since 2019, when the ecclesiastical authorities decided to move their journey from Sunday to the third Saturday of Lent.

Celebrating their 50 years of devotion and veneration, the Brotherhoods of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe will carry out the processional tour of the solemn procession of the venerated image of the Holy Christ of Esquipulas, an icon of our faith.
