Guatemala lives a day of demonstrations in rejection of mandatory insurance for vehicles approved by the Government.

Thousands of motorists have been stranded for several hours in blockages; Some turn off their vehicles, others take a break or get off the car while the demonstrations continue.

One of the locks is recorded in the peripheral ring, at the entrance to the Bethania neighborhood, zone 7 of the capital, where the pilot Carlos Martínez, 76, was interviewed.

Martínez said he was caught in the blockade from 9 pm on Tuesday, March 18, that is, he spent the night in his vehicle along with other drivers.

Martínez, who works as a taxi driver, expressed concern about the impact of these blockages on the elderly and in whom they have low income, since these actions affect the economy.

He criticized the Government for not having properly considered the implications of imposing mandatory insurance for vehicles, especially for those who cannot afford to pay it.

The interviewee, with 41 years of experience as a driver, said that responsible pilots are unfairly paying for the mistakes of more reckless ones.

He recalled the bus accident under the Belize bridge, which occurred on February 10, which, according to him, seems to have precipitated the implementation of the insurance.

“Sad what is happening, we are already of the elderly and I go over 76 years. Spend the night revealed without being able to go down, thank God they have not assaulted us,” he said.

Martínez makes trips from the terminal to the city center. In addition, he expressed concern about how the new insurance can pay, since his income is limited and variable.

He stressed that it depends on his work as a taxi driver for his daily livelihood and that, at his age, he has few alternatives to generate income.
