Francisco Jiménez, Minister of the Interior, said in an interview with Free pressthat the mandatory insurance for vehicles that will be implemented as of May 1, also aims to detect motorists who have no license and will now be obliged to have that document to hire the insurance.
In addition, it seeks to identify the alleged hitmen who use motorcycles to commit crimes.
“It would allow us, as the Ministry of the Interior, to have greater control, particularly those who, unfortunately, are not most motorcyclists, but who are involved in crimes in which they wear motorcycles,” he said.
The official commented that it is not necessary to create an entity to supervise insurers, because there is already inspection of these companies by the financial and banking system.
“This mechanism would have to continue. I don’t think it is necessary to create a new mechanism,” he acknowledged.
He commented that mandatory insurance is not intended to reduce road mishaps, but protect people suffering from injuries during accidents.
“Only insurance does not solve the problem. And I want to comment that we are working in parallel to increase the control of buses and in road supervision,” he said.
Jiménez said they are strengthening the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police to have more control capacity.
“There are another set of norms that are being reforming. There is another set of regulations of the Traffic Law that are discussing from the changes made in Congress. We are working on them,” he said.
Inter -institutional table
The official said they will create an inter -institutional table in which different institutions will participate, including the Ministry of Communications, to carry out comprehensive work on traffic control, signage and road culture.
“It is a complex issue that we are beginning to implement jointly with this insurance issue,” he said.
