Police identifies pirate taxis used in protests against mandatory insurance

The National Civil Police (PNC) reported that it identified several vehicles used as pirate taxis that served to transport overwhelming objects during protests against mandatory insurance in zone 1 of the capital, where, in addition, one of these units rammed a group of riot.

The PNC published on their social networks that unknown men mobilized in these units, which had the circulation plates covered.

According to the institution, one of these taxis was used to ram a group of special forces agents who dissolved a protest in the 18th and 10th Avenue in Zone 1 capital.

“Taxi drivers not regulated by the Municipality (Pirates) are the ones who incite violence. Vehicles with covered plates are observed, from where they transfer bags with stones and other objects with which they assaulted the police, in addition to transporting individuals that cause violent events,” the PNC wrote in their Facebook account.

Repeal agreements

The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, reported on Wednesday, March 19 that he will repeal the mandatory insurance for all vehicles in favor of third parties, announced last Monday, and that has caused road blockages in the last 48 hours.

In a message released through their official channels, the president backed down as he forced all vehicle owners, including motorcycles, to hire insurance in favor of third parties as of May 1.

The regulations caused that, in the last two days, blockades were recorded on some important roads in Guatemala City, which led to the suspension of the face -to -face educational day in many cases, in addition to the cancellation of commercial activities.

Arévalo de León indicated in his message that this Wednesday a dialogue table was created and that all parties promised to contribute to the elaboration of a new general transport law, which would enter into force within one year.

The president also assured that the protests and blockages were used by “criminals” who used them “to generate chaos and affect thousands of families.”
