The water volcano It is a large volcano, located between the departments of Escuintla and Sacatepéquez. It is seen from different places and within it lives an important population of flora and fauna.
The volcano is close to the cities of Antigua Guatemala (10 km) and Escuintla (18 km) and several populations are close to Allotenango, Ciudad Vieja and San Miguel Escobar, San Juan del Obispo, Santa Maria de Jesus and Palin, to mention some.
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) explains that eThis place has had records of natural disasters. “Based on historical records, it is known that the volcano can generate mud flows, associated with heavy and prolonged rains. Because mud flows can also contain a high percentage of rock blocks and trees, often they are also defined as flow flows,” says a statement.
Significant historical cases of mud flows include the one that destroyed the then capital of the General Captaincy of Guatemala on September 10, 1541, But also more recent cases, such as mud flows that occurred during the Agatha Storm in 2010, February 2024 fires and the Mud flows occurred in 2024.
THE PUMA THAT HAVINGS THE WATER VOLCTY
In January 2024, a puma was seen in the water volcano. The trap cameras captured for three seconds the presence of a puma or mountain lion. Almost a month later the fires that affected the water volcano where they lost hectares of forests and the biodiversity of the water volcano.
After the fires in that same year, the researchers of the place feared for the life of the animal, not only for the fire but for other problems that exist in the place such as hunter and deforestation.
However, a trap camera identified the movement of a puma of similar size to the observed and is believed to be the same as it survived.
José Soto, biologist, ecologist and conservationist, professor at New College of Florida And researcher associated with the Catie project, he explained at the time that the Puma looks healthy and corpulent. “This example is quite large and muscular and it is an indication that this forest offers a good base of dams such as mountain cars, pizotes, tepezcuintles,” he says.
The biologist says that there is no complete security that is the same, but there is a probability, but it is believed by the area where this video was located. Perhaps there is a small population of these animals. “There is a community of mammals that tell us that the forests of this place are worth it to be restored and protected,” he adds.
For his part, Gabriel Reyes, founder of the educational project Los Bichos de Diana, Located in Ciudad Vieja, he adds that it is really worrying to see these organisms that are trying to survive.
“This specimen could be moving between the volcanoes of Acatenango, Fire and water and unfortunately we continue to see that the fire limited the area to find food and move with confidence,” adds Reyes.
In it Agua vocán It was also found at ABONIA ANZUETOI lizard that had more than half a century of not being seen, as well as the presence of the biological diversity that exists as Tigrillos, Ocelotes, and Tepezcuintles, diversity of birds, about 30 types of snakes, among others.
