The president of the Board of Directors of the Bar Association and Notaries of Guatemala (CANG), Patricia Gámez, talks about the work that entails being in charge of that entity and how she will react to possible pressures, for the responsibility she will have in the different application commissions.

The election of the CANG authorities is controversial and media, because they participate in the integration of application commissions responsible for selecting senior officials of the Justice System, as magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice, the Court of Appeals, the Institute of Public Public Defense and the Attorney General.

What plans do you have for the Bar Association during your presidency?

—Hor now, verify and receive all the documentation and information necessary to carry out the relevant efforts of the Board of Directors. For now, my approach is a good school administration.

How can the Bar Association guarantee the rule of law in Guatemala?

—With an active and effective participation in the training and development of their aggregate professionals, so that they can participate in a transparent and responsible manner for the benefit of the country.

Do you think you will receive pressures when you participate in the application commission to choose the Attorney General?

—In the election of the attorney general I will receive pressures from my colleagues so that the right thing is done. Of course, that is the pressure I hope. I do not respond to undue pressures.

Will it be the first time you participate in application commissions?

-Yeah. Actually, I have participated as a applicant; As commissioned I have not participated, but I have observed the integration and participation of the commissions. I hope from these a responsible, objective and transparent attitude in the search for the best appropriate profiles.

How important is CANG’s participation in nomination commissions?

“It’s very important.” Everything must be transparent. We must verify the information presented for the profile of the participants to public office; These verifications are necessary to provide the best profiles in the choice. We must ensure that they are suitable, honorable and capable people for the position they will occupy. The participation of the Bar Association must be effective.

For what purpose considers that the former Board of Directors of CANG did not want them to take possession?

—Our work is to assume the functions that correspond to us, making the pertinent efforts. The reasons for these measures are the responsibility of the people who acted in that way. I couldn’t tell him what intentions they had.
