In an interview with CNN, Stephen Graham explained that his motivation arose after knowing several violent incidents that impacted him deeply, which led him to question the relationship between youth violence and the social circumstances that surround it.

Both Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, creators of the miniseries, have clarified that Adolescence It does not follow a specific case, but is inspired by a series of homicides committed by adolescents, driven by misogyny caused by bad parenting efforts, the disinterest of the school system and the lack of guidance by the government and communities.

In his interventions with international media, Graham explained that, although the plot of the series is a mixture of several cases, inspiration came from a media case.
