With the advance of the Lenten Time, the streets and avenues of the capital have become scenarios full of faith, fervor and cultural expression. In this context, the processional exit of Jesús Nazareno redemptive of the captives marks the proximity of the Easter week and evokes, with his image, the living memory of the passion of Christ.

A few days after Palm SundayGuatemala City is filled with spirituality, between the marches With Tzijoj, the aroma of incense and colorful carpets that decorate this liturgical season.

According to the oral tradition, the image of Jesus Nazareno Redeemer of the captives comes from Seville and it is presumed that dates from the 16th century, although the date of his arrival in Guatemala and his initial location is unknown. Originally it represented Jesus in the flagellation, and his entire body size, made of articulated wood, presents a shocking realism with lash, bruises, moorings and lacerations, especially in the back.

The image is accompanied by the Blessed Virgin of Dolores, who arrived in 1920 to the Santa Marta parish, in zone 3, from the Beaterio de Belén. According to testimonies, it was Father Gabriel Solares who rescued her from oblivion and managed her transfer, after finding her protected in a cellar.

The procession first came out in 1925 and, in 2000, he celebrated his diamond weddings by commemorating 75 years of devotional tour of the neighborhoods, rods and El Gallito.
