The Episcopal Conference of Guatemala (CEG), through a statement, affirmed that it supports the statements of Pope Leo XIV against war conflicts, which were criticized by the president of the United States, Donald Trump.

“With feelings of filial closeness to your holiness, the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala hereby express our gratitude for your tireless work for peace, in these moments of war conflicts that affect all of humanity, especially the poorest,” the Conference expressed.

He called for “the bombs to be silenced and the call for peace to resonate in hearts,” as was expressed in the recent Vigil for Peace, on Saturday, April 11:

“Enough of the war!… The rulers, sit down for dialogue and mediation,” he remarked.

The CEG pointed out that Latin America knows the drama of war and confrontation, “born from hearts incapable of recognizing in each person the image of God, whose dignity must be respected and life protected at all times, especially in the increasing armed conflicts of our days.”

“We recognize the universal value of his call to peace as a result of the resurrection of the Lord: “Peace I leave you, my peace I give you” (John 14, 27) that his Magisterium has assumed since the beginning of his service to the Church and the world “Peace be with you” (John 20, 19-21)”, he remarked.

He added: “We ask the Lord for the conversion of those who, without respect and understanding, speak words outside of reality and every ethical dimension that his Magisterium proclaims: an unarmed and disarming peace, and we pray for the conversion of all the hearts involved in the conflicts that afflict the world today.”

President Donald Trump assured on Monday, April 13, that he will not apologize to Pope Leo XIV for statements in which he accused him of being “weak on crime,” because the pontiff said “things that are wrong,” in reference to his criticism of the war in Iran.

Far from calming down his attacks on the pope, which began Sunday with a lengthy post on his Truth Social network, Trump insisted that “he is very soft on crime and other issues.”

Trump attacked the pontiff on April 12, who has been highly critical of the war in Iran and has launched several calls for peace, accusing him of being “weak on crime and terrible in foreign policy.”

Leo XIV responded this Monday and assured that he is not “afraid of the Trump Administration.”
