The company operates 28 business units with solar panels, including stores and Distribution Centers (CEDI), which represents 4.6% of self-generation of electrical energy, 100% of its operations in the country have wastewater treatment and more than 67% of the energy used comes from renewable sources.

These actions are part of Walmart’s Shared Value strategy, which seeks to ensure that business growth goes hand in hand with the well-being of society and care for the environment.

“At Walmart we continue to move forward with concrete actions to reduce our environmental impact in Guatemala. Energy efficiency, responsible use of water, recycling and the elimination of single-use plastic bags are part of a more sustainable operation, which seeks to generate value for families, communities and the country,” commented Luis Arturo Ramírez, deputy manager of Corporate Affairs for Walmart Guatemala and Honduras.

During 2025, Walmart Guatemala recycled more than 17,900 metric tons of materials from its operation. This result is equivalent to saving more than 252 thousand trees, avoiding the use of more than 119,700 barrels of oil and saving more than 433.5 million liters of water.

In addition, thanks to the “No bags please” campaign and the promotion of reusable bags, implemented since 2021, the company has prevented 524 million single-use plastic bags from circulating in Guatemala.

The company has also incorporated technology to make its operations more efficient, such as LED lighting, efficient refrigeration systems and solutions to optimize water use in stores and distribution centers.

For its private brands, Walmart requests certifications from its suppliers that certify the responsible and sustainable use of forests and African palm. In addition, it maintains the commitment that 75% of seafood and fish come from sustainable sources.

Regional advances

At the Central American level, Walmart managed to ensure that 77.9% of the electricity consumed comes from renewable sources and diverted 73.7% of waste from landfills. Likewise, 47.7 million reusable plastic containers (RPC) were returned to the supply chain and 79.3% of private label packaging is already recyclable, reusable or compostable.

In food recovery, the company reached 32.1% of food suitable for donation, with more than 6,657 tons delivered to food banks. In Guatemala, this network allowed the donation of food packages to the Food Bank to support more than 2,100 people affected by the earthquakes in Santa María de Jesús, Sacatepéquez, during 2025.
