President Bernardo Arévalo revealed this Monday, May 4, details of the interviews carried out with the six candidates for the position of attorney general and head of the Public Ministry (MP), and reiterated that the designated person must lead an institutional rescue process.
During a press conference, the president explained that the interviews were held last week, accompanied by the Secretary General of the Presidency, Juan Gerardo Guerrero, and the Minister of the Interior, Marco Antonio Villeda, as part of the coordination between the Executive and the MP.
“In the six interviews I conducted, I was able to evaluate many aspects that go beyond the formal analysis that was done in the application committee,” he stated.
Arévalo indicated that the meetings addressed the main challenges facing the MP, an institution that, according to the president, is going through a critical moment and requires leadership to recover it.
“It is in a critical process and requires leadership to rescue it to strengthen itself and respond to the expectations and demands of citizens,” he said.
The president indicated that he will announce his decision once the period for challenges against the candidates ends, in accordance with the legal process. He stressed that the election responds to his constitutional obligation and the need for an upright profile, committed to democracy and opposed to corruption.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the new attorney general will not respond to the interests of the Executive.
“The person who will be in charge of the Public Ministry is not at the service of the president or the Government, but rather serves the nation,” he assured.
The president added that the next head of the MP must make a difference in the leadership of the institution and contribute to a new stage in the country’s justice.
The final candidates for the position are the lawyers Julio César Rivera Clavería, Néctor Guilebaldo de León, Beyla Estrada Barrientos, Gabriel Estuardo García Luna, Carlos Alberto García Alvarado and César Augusto Ávila Aparicio.
