He Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) announced the launch of the sixth commemorative coin which will be made available to the public in 2026, as part of activities planned by the institution for this year.
The president of the central bank, Alvaro González Riccireported on the minting of this special piece, designed to remember the origin of the bank after the country’s second monetary reform: “The Bank of Guatemala, since its creation as a state bank, had the power to formulate and execute monetary, exchange and credit policy, aimed at creating conditions conducive to the orderly growth of the country’s economy,” González Ricci highlighted.
He Bank of Guatemala officially began operations on July 1, 1946marking the beginning of a new stage in the country’s monetary and financial policy.
Commemorative coin for the 80 years of Banguat
The piece pays tribute to the history, trust and monetary stability that has accompanied Guatemala since its founding.
“It is a matter of training and education. We are honoring being a bank of culture, as we are also known. And again we seek to give that credibility and trust, explaining it in a simple way, whether with the coins or bills that Banguat is issuing and minting,” said González Ricci about the issuance of commemorative coins.
On the back the effigy of the doctor stands out Manuel Noriega Moralesfirst president of the Bank of Guatemala, who held the position between 1946 and 1954.
To the right you can see the silhouette of the building Bank of Guatemalaarchitectural symbol of solidity and institutional transparency.
The design also incorporates a seal inspired by the first banknote. 100 quetzales issued in 1948, with the inscription “80 YEARS” inside.
The legend appears on the outer ring “Bank of Guatemala 1946-2026”while at the bottom the name appears “A Quetzal”.

Coin characteristics
The new Banguat commemorative coin It has the following specifications:
- 40 millimeters in diameter
- Alloy 925 thousandths of silver and 75 thousandths of copper
- The official cost of the piece will be Q750.00

The authorities highlighted that its size exceeds 7 millimeters to the coins of the series Civic Centerwhose diameter is 33 millimeters.
Although the piece has a face value of Q1its emission has character commemorative and collectibleso it is not intended for monetary purposes of daily circulation.
When will it be on sale?
The Bank of Guatemala reported that the currency will be available from June 30 to July 3, 2026.
Furthermore, as in previous launches, a pre-sale which will be announced on the institution’s official social networks so that those interested can reserve it in advance.
Adds to the Civic Center series
The currency for 80 years of Banguat will complement the special collection of five coins dedicated to Guatemala Civic Centeran issue that recognizes the historical, architectural and artistic value of this emblematic urban complex.
This series will be marketed May 25 to 29and will have a prior pre-sale.
