The business sector, represented by the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations (CACIF), the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala (CIG) and the Chamber of Agriculture of Guatemala (Camagro), spoke this Tuesday, May 5, on the appointment of Gabriel Estuardo García Luna as attorney general and head of the Public Ministry (MP), by President Bernardo Arévalo.
In separate statements, the three organizations agreed to highlight the importance of the designation process and its impact on legal certainty and the institutional strengthening of the country.
The CACIF indicated that the organized private sector recognizes the process of appointing the attorney general of the Public Ministry and values its development in accordance with the law and its contribution to institutional strengthening.
“The organized private sector recognizes the process of appointing the Attorney General of the Public Ministry, valuing its development in accordance with the law and its contribution to the institutional strengthening of the country,” details the CACIF.
“The election of the Attorney General for the period 2026-2030, carried out within the legal framework and established deadlines, through a public procedure, constitutes an important step to consolidate legal certainty and strengthen trust in the institutions,” he says.
For its part, the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry called for the management of the new MP authority to be conducted in accordance with the law, prioritizing transparency, accountability and strengthening the rule of law.
“As an industrial sector, we value the completion of this designation process and recognize the importance of having it concluded within the legal framework and corresponding deadlines as part of the democratic strengthening of the country,” indicates the CIG.
Furthermore, it states: “We call for the management of the new authority to be conducted in strict accordance with the law, prioritizing transparency, accountability and strengthening the rule of law.”
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Agriculture of Guatemala highlighted the role of the Public Ministry as a key autonomous institution for compliance with the law and legal security.
“Given the appointment of the attorney general and head of the Public Ministry for the period 2026-2030, made by the President of the Republic in accordance with article 251 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala, based on the list sent by the Nomination Commission, the Chamber of Agriculture of Guatemala reiterates the importance of the Public Ministry as an autonomous institution in charge of ensuring strict compliance with the laws of the country and the exercise of public criminal action,” it points out.
Furthermore, it states that the Public Ministry constitutes a fundamental pillar of the rule of law and an indispensable condition for legal certainty, security and the development of productive activity.
