The president of the United States, Donald Trump, launched this Wednesday, May 6, 2026, a new warning to Mexico for the combat to the drug traffickingespecially the traffic of fentanylstating from the White House that Washington could take direct action if the Mexican authorities do not strengthen their operations against the drug cartels.
“The entry of drugs by sea has decreased by 97%, and now we have put the ground force in place, which is much easier. You will hear some complaints from people in Mexico and other places, but if they are not going to do their job, we will,” Trump said.
The statement occurs in the midst of a bilateral relationship marked by tension, after the US president has suggested on several occasions the possibility of intervening in Mexican territory to combat the postersan option rejected by the Sheinbaum Government, which appeals to national sovereignty.
Fentanyl, cartels and diplomatic pressure
Since his return to the White HouseTrump turned the fight against drug traffic on a security priority. His administration has promoted a more aggressive strategy against criminal organizations and has classified the main Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
Although Trump has praised publicly their relationship with Sheinbaum, his statements reinforce the pressure on Mexico at a time when the United States considers the neighboring country a key point in the production and transit of synthetic drugs to its territory.
Accusation against Rocha Moya aggravates tension
Trump’s new message adds to other events that have complicated the relationship between both governments. In April, an anti-drug operation in Chihuahua involved CIA agents without formal authorization from the Mexican federal government, according to Mexican media reports.
Additionally, Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya was accused by US authorities of alleged ties to the Sinaloa cartel, along with other Mexican officials. Mexico has indicated that the United States requested his arrest for extradition purposes, but has not presented sufficient evidence, according to the information available.
