A video from a security camera shows the moment in which an agent of the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) of Salamá, Baja Verapaz, was attacked with bullets this Thursday, May 7, in the La Infiesta square, while regulating traffic.
According to preliminary information, the attack occurred when the agent was on the side of the street in front of a man who was between a red pick-up truck and a white car. The images show that, while the agent was directing traffic, the subject pulled out a firearm and shot her several times.
The agent falls injured on the asphalt strip in front of the eyes of drivers and passers-by who were in the area.
After the attack, people who were at the scene helped the victim and took him to the Salamá Hospital emergency room.
The person responsible fled the scene. Another man also appears in the video, so the authorities are investigating whether he had a relationship with the attacker.
So far, authorities have not revealed the motive for the attack.
Commune demands capture
The Municipality of Salamá condemned the armed attack and demanded that the authorities promptly locate and capture the person responsible.
In a statement, the commune reported that the agent remains in critical condition and is receiving medical attention at a health center.

The commune pointed out that no act of intolerance or aggression can be justified against those who work in road regulation and the safety of pedestrians and drivers.
Likewise, he asked the authorities to carry out the corresponding investigations to clarify the incident and deduce responsibilities.
