Gerardo Reyes is a Mexican migrant who was recently transferred to an ICE detention center in Texas, because He was arrested at a police checkpoint while driving his vehicle in the company of his son.
Now, the Mexican’s relatives demanded on May 14 greater transparency and more severe sanctions for the ICE agent involved in the case.
The San Marcos Police later announced that agent Jaciel Cortina, involved in Reyes’ arrest, was temporarily suspended for 24 hourswhile investigations continue to clarify what happened.

San Juan Escalante, Reyes’ wife, said that the sanctions against the agent “are not enough,” after her husband remained held for more than two months in a detention center located in Hutto.
“I felt like they spat in my face.because they did not take responsibility for the fact that they made a mistake and have to fix it,” the woman told the EFE agency.
The Hays District Attorney’s Office decided to dismiss the “obstruction of public functions” charges they had filed against Reyes; However, similar accusations against his son Esteban, 17 years old, are still in force.
However, as Deputy Prosecutor Greg Coxx noted in a document announcing the decision, the prosecution believes that the police officer acted “within his legal authority” at the time of arrest.
