In the history of World Cups, few records reflect both defensive solidity and clean sheets. And in that category there are two names that dominate above all: English Peter Shilton and the Frenchman Fabien Barthez, both with 10 games without conceding a goal in World Cups.
Between the two they accumulate 20 matches with a clean sheet, a mark that maintains them as the highest benchmarks under the three sticks in the history of the tournament.
Peter Shilton built his record among the World Cups in Spain 1982 and Italy 1990. The historic English goalkeeper was a key part of a team that came close to touching World Cup gloryalthough it ended up being stopped by historical figures such as Diego Armando Maradona in Mexico 1986 and Andreas Brehme in 1990.
For his part, Fabien Barthez left his mark among France 1998 and Germany 2006. The French goalkeeper was one of the great protagonists of the title won by the “Bleus” at home and became an iconic figure thanks to his reflexes and personality on the field.
Barthez only conceded two goals during the campaign that led France to world championship in 1998 and was also immortalized by the traditional kiss on the head that Laurent Blanc gave him before each game.
Behind both of them appear other legendary archers. With eight games without receiving a score, the German Sepp Maier and the Brazilian Claudio Taffarel appear.
With seven unbeaten goals, big names such as Manuel Neuer, Fernando Muslera and Iker Casillas appear. The Spanish goalkeeper was essential for Spain’s title in South Africa 2010, where he kept a clean sheet in all the qualifying rounds and barely conceded two goals in the entire tournament.
A similar story starred Gianluigi Buffon in Germany 2006. The Italian only conceded two goals in seven games and none of them were from open play: one was an own goal by Cristian Zaccardo and the other a penalty scored by Zinedine Zidane in the final.
Now, the 2026 World Cup is presented as a new opportunity for several current goalkeepers to try to get closer to those historical records.
Among the candidates are Thibaut Courtoiswho already has seven clean sheets in World Cups, and the Brazilian Alisson, who has five.
The goalkeepers who shone in Qatar 2022. Jordan Pickford managed to keep a clean sheet in three of five games with England, while the Moroccan Yassine Bounou and the Argentine Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez They achieved three clean sheets during their respective campaigns.
With the new format of 48 teams and more games in dispute, goalkeepers will have greater opportunities to increase their statistics, although keeping the goal closed will continue to be one of the most difficult challenges in world football.
Because if the history of the World Cups shows anything, it is that, beyond the scorers and offensive stars, titles are also built on defensive security.
