hearing to hear the extradition request against Ronald Alexys and Héctor Rubén Morales Guerra, brothers of the mayor of Dolores, Petén, Francisco Morales, was suspended this Friday, May 22, after the defense lawyer presented an excuse for health reasons.
The accused had to appear before the Fifth Criminal Sentencing Court to hear the extradition request made by the US authorities; However, due to the suspension of the proceedings, they were not transferred to the Court Tower.
The Public Ministry (MP) reported that both are required by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accused of allegedly being part of a structure dedicated to drug trafficking between 2006 and May 2024.
According to the investigation, the Morales Guerra brothers would have participated in activities related to the transfer of drugs to US territory.
After hearing the excuse presented by the defense, the court decided to postpone the hearing. The new date was subject to the court’s agenda, so it was not set immediately.
The brothers were captured on February 20 in Dolores, Petén, during an operation coordinated by Guatemalan authorities.
On April 29, Carlos Obeniel Morales Guerra, another of the brothers arrested in the same case, agreed to be extradited to the United States during a hearing held in the Third Criminal Sentencing Court.
The US authorities link those identified with a criminal structure dedicated to drug trafficking that would have operated for several years in the department of Petén, one of the main routes used for the transfer of drugs in Central America.
