The explosion of four tank trucks loaded with gas liquefied petroleum (LPG) was recorded on the morning of June 4 in the San Juan Negrete neighborhood, in the municipality of Tepeaca, Puebla, Mexicowhich generated an intense mobilization of emergency forces and forced the evacuation of educational centers, a hospital and nearby homes. The incident left three people injured and caused a column of smoke and flames visible for several kilometers away.

Videos spread on social networks show the moment when the detonations shake the area and generate enormous columns of fire. According to official reports, the incident occurred on a property where fuel and LP gas were allegedly stored, although authorities are keeping investigations open to establish the causes of the emergency and determine if there were irregular activities at the location.

The Government of Puebla activated a Incident Command System to coordinate response efforts. Elements of Civil Protection, Firefighters, Secretariat of Public Security, National Guard, Secretariat of National Defense, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and municipal authorities participated in the operation. The teams worked on fighting the fire, cooling units and evaluating risks in nearby properties.

Hospital, educational centers and homes evacuated

Given the risk of new explosions, the authorities ordered the preventive evacuation of the Tepeaca General Hospital, the BUAP “2 de Octubre” High School, the Miguel Negrete Novoa School Center and dozens of homes located around the affected area.

Only at the Miguel Negrete Novoa School Center were evacuated 1,753 students, who were handed over to their parents and guardians. In total, more than two thousand people They were moved to safe areas while emergency services worked to control the situation.

Explosions destroy structure where tank trucks were located

The force of the detonations destroyed a large part of the structure where the tank trucks were located. Images released by authorities show severely damaged concrete columns and remains of the units affected by the fire.

Emergency teams also carried out cooling work on vehicles located within the property to prevent the flames from spreading or causing new explosions.

Authorities investigate a second nearby warehouse

During the inspections carried out After the fire, authorities located a second facility where there were tankers and units with fuel. The property was kept under guard for the corresponding investigations.

The coordinator of Civil Protection of Puebla, Bernabé López Santos, reported that the area remains under surveillance while proceedings continue to determine the origin of the explosion and establish whether there were activities related to the irregular storage or transfer of fuel.

As of the closing of this note, authorities reported three injured people and no fatalities. The Government of Puebla asked the population to stay away from the affected area and only follow the information disseminated through official channels.
