The Tunisian team has experienced a nightmare in its debut in the 2026 World Cup, because not only did it lose to Sweden, but it was also the victim of a 5-1 win that put into doubt whether the country will even manage to advance to the next round of the group stage.
Tunisia’s humiliation was so great in its World Cup debut that, even this June 16, the Football Federation of that country announced the dismissal of his coach, the Moroccan Sabri Lamouchi.
Now, what caused surprise was the appointment of the new coach of Tunisia: Frenchman Hervé Renardwho will take charge of the team after an agreement between the federation and Lamouchi.
The new coach, 57 years old, is popularly known as “the executioner of Argentina”, due to his famous participation in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the Saudi Arabia team.
The reason why Renard was described with that pseudonym was because, in the first match of the group stage of Group C of the 2022 World Cup, Saudi Arabia managed to beat Argentina 2-1.
This caused great surprise because Argentina was one of the favorites to win the competition, but having lost against Renard’s team generated many doubts about his performance in that World Cup.
It will be the third time that the French coach has been in a World Cup, after the previous appointment with the Saudi team and with Morocco in Russia 2018. On this occasion he will debut on Saturday against Japan in Mexico.
The French coach is a football globetrotter with extensive experience in African football.
In fact, throughout his career he has coached the national teams of Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast and Morocco, as well as teams such as USM Alger and, in France, Sochaux and Lille, as well as the French women’s team between 2023 and 2024.
