DreamWorks announced the return of its successful animated saga Shrek with a fifth film that will take audiences beyond Far Far Away in a new adventure. On this occasion, the production is in charge of a new team, which led dubbing actors such as Eugenio Derbez and Alfonso Obregón to express doubts about returning to play their characters in the Latin Spanish dubbing.
This film, scheduled to hit theaters in 2027, began surrounded by doubts on the part of the public, from the first images, which raised questions about the animation, to the effect that the absence of voice actors for characters like Shrek, Donkey and Fiona would have.
It was until June 16 when some of those doubts were cleared up and the departure of one of the most important voice actors in the franchise was confirmed. With the release of the first preview it was confirmed that the Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez will resume his character of Donkey.
Derbez has been the voice in Latin Spanish of this character, whose combination of jokes, personality, charisma and colloquial expressions has contributed to the success of the films in Latin America.
Months ago, Derbez told Adela Micha that he would resume the role of Donkey only if they allowed him to modify the dubbing script to create a closer connection with the Latin audience, a freedom he had in previous installments. Apparently, that agreement was reached and will allow their participation in the new production.
Another piece of good news was the return of voice actress Dulce Guerrero, who reprized her role as Fiona and whose voice could already be heard in the preview. Still, fans of the film will have to deal with the absence of Alfonso Obregón, who voiced Shrek in the previous four films.
Conversation quickly arose on social media about Shrek’s original voice, since the change of actor was evident in the trailer. For now, DreamWorks has not revealed who will play the character, although it is expected to announce it soon.
Media like The Country They highlight that both Derbez, Guerrero and Obregón expressed doubts about returning to the project. Finally, Obregón will be the big absentee from this fifth installment, which presents the public with a more adult version of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and even their children.

In the English dub, Mike Myers will return as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. Media like Minute 60 They highlight that actress Zendaya will join the franchise to play Felicia.
