Mexico practically secured its qualification to the next round of the 2026 World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 at the Guadalajara Stadium. The match was defined by two key actions: an error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu that allowed Luis Romo to score and a decisive intervention by Raúl “Tala” Rangel in the final minutes.

The match remained balanced for much of the match and ended up being resolved by details in both areas.

The decisive play came in the 50th minute. Kim Seung-gyu collided with a teammate while trying to control an aerial ball inside the six-yard box. The ball was free and Luis Romo took the opportunity to finish with his left foot and score the only goal of the game.

Until then, South Korea had shown defensive order and had managed to contain the Mexican attacks.

Tala Rangel’s save

The South Korean response came in the final stretch of the match. In the 83rd minute, Cho Gue-sung connected with a header inside the six-yard box that was close to tying things up.

Raúl “Tala” Rangel reacted on the goal line and prevented scoring with a decisive intervention that allowed Mexico to maintain the advantage in the final minutes.

The action was decisive in ensuring the victory of the team led by Javier Aguirre and maintaining the lead in Group A.

At the end of the match, Mexico added six points and secured its qualification for the next round. Kim Seung-gyu’s mistake and Rangel’s intervention marked two of the most important actions of the match.
