The airline wingo has inaugurated this June 25th its new direct route between Medellin, Colombiaand the Guatemala Citya connection that according to the company aims to strengthen air connectivity between both countries and expand travel options for tourists, businessmen and students.

The new operation will have three weekly frequencieson Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and will offer rates from US$80 each wayapproximately Q620including taxes and airport fees.

With this addition, Wingo becomes the first airline that directly connects Medellín with Guatemala Cityfacilitating tourist, cultural and commercial exchange between Colombia and Guatemala. Since there are currently Guatemala Medellín options but via El Salvador, Colombia or Panama.

Guatemala and Colombia strengthen their air connection

The opening of the route is part of the airline’s international expansion strategy in Central America. According to Jorge Jiménez, Wingo’s Commercial and Planning Vice President, the connection will strengthen the links between two markets with growing economic and tourist dynamism.

The new route gives Guatemalan travelers direct access to one of the most important cities in Colombia, considered a center of business, innovation and tourism. In addition, from Medellín passengers will be able to connect with a network of 15 routes operated by the airline, between national and international destinations.

Authorities highlight impact on tourism and commerce

The inaugural flight was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) and the Colombian Embassy in Guatemala.

The authorities agreed that the new connection will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations, boosting tourism and generating greater opportunities for commercial, academic and cultural exchange.

For the general director of INGUAT, Harris Whitbeck, the new operation opens opportunities to attract more Colombian visitors to the country and promote the cultural, natural and gastronomic wealth of Guatemala.

For its part, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics highlighted that the arrival of new international routes reflects the confidence of the airline industry in the growth potential of the Guatemalan market.
