Former pastor sentenced to 61 years for sexual abuse seeks release from prison through appeal

In the Mixed Chamber of the Court of Appeals of the department of Totonicapán, a hearing will be held on July 1 to continue the processing of the special appeal related to the review of the coercive measures imposed on Welser Gilmar Reyes Florián, a former pastor sentenced to 61 years in prison for sexual assault with an aggravated sentence.

The former evangelical pastor will ask to be released from prison, since the 61-year sentence imposed against him is not yet final.

Reyes, who dressed as King David, according to a video that circulated on social networks, was sentenced in 2024 to 61 years in prison for sexual abuse against his own daughters. After this case, more complaints were filed against him for sexual abuse, according to the minors’ mother.

Rina Calderón, ex-wife of the convicted man, called on the judges of the Chamber who will hear the case to resolve in accordance with the law and take into account the influence that, according to her, the former evangelical leader still has.

“I want to call on the magistrates, whom I do not know, but surely they are suitable and that is why they occupy those positions to act according to logic. I understand that this man wants to leave to escape because no one is going to wait to serve a 61-year sentence. There are many people who are afraid; they are afraid because they know what he did to them,” Calderón pointed out.

Since last year, this legal appeal was presented in the Fifth Court of Appeals of Quetzaltenango. However, Calderón challenged the magistrates due to conflict of interest and the case was transferred to the department of Totonicapán.

The former religious leader ran the Misterios Capital de Luz church, located in the municipality of Cantel, Quetzaltenango.
