Two people died this Wednesday, July 1, when a wooden bridge collapsed while a truck loaded with sand was trying to cross it in the Las Limas hamlet, in Dolores, Petén, reported the Departmental Municipal Firefighters.
According to the lifeguards at the Dolores station, the structure gave way when the vehicle passed over the bridge, which fell on two people who were below.
The first responders went to the scene and, with the support of neighbors, carried out search and recovery work for several minutes.
At the scene they located the bodies of a man, 38 years old, and a girl, 3, who had died.
The bodies were recovered and the corresponding authorities were notified for legal proceedings.
The driver of the truck was taken to a private care center in Poptún, where he received medical attention. The severity of his injuries was not reported.
Local media reported that the collapse of the bridge left more than 80 families from nearby communities incommunicado.
So far, authorities have not released the identity of the victims or the circumstances why both were under the structure at the time of the collapse.
The causes of the accident will be established by the competent authorities.
