Orjan Nyland arrived at the 2026 World Cup in an unusual situation. The 35-year-old Norwegian goalkeeper played in the tournament without having a contract with any club, but that did not stop him from becoming the hero of Norway’s qualification to the quarterfinals.
The goalkeeper was decisive in the 2-1 victory over Brazil by making four key saves and stopping a penalty against Bruno Guimarães in the 14th minute. His performance was decisive in eliminating Canarinha.
Nyland’s story began in Volda, a coastal town in Norway, where he played various sports during his childhood. At the age of 13 he stood out in alpine skiing and even joined the Norwegian youth team for that discipline.
However, football ended up prevailing. Nyland left the snow slopes to become a goalkeeper, a decision that led him to star in one of the most memorable performances of the 2026 World Cup.
Nyland’s time in the clubs was never easy. After signing for Aston Villa in 2018, a ruptured Achilles tendon slowed his progress and relegated him to a secondary role in England.
He later went through Norwich City, Bournemouth and Reading without managing to establish himself as a starter. His best period came with Sevilla, where he played 54 games in two seasons before becoming a substitute again and leaving the club.
