Colombia’s defeat against Switzerland in the penalty shootout left an unprecedented scenario in the 2026 World Cup: Argentina became the only team on the American continent that is still in the race for the title.
With the elimination of the coffee growers, the Albiceleste was left as the last survivor of Conmebol and also of Concacaf, whose three hosts – the United States, Mexico and Canada – had already been left out of the tournament.
The quarterfinal map reflects a clear European predominance. Six of the eight qualified teams belong to UEFA, while Morocco represents Africa and Argentina alone supports the aspirations of the American continent.
Beyond the search for the two-time championship, the team led by Lionel Scaloni now carries an additional historical weight: maintaining the tradition of the World Cups held in America, where the continent’s teams have dominated almost all of history.
A tradition that only Germany broke
With the 2026 edition, America will have hosted nine World Cups: Uruguay 1930, Brazil 1950, Chile 1962, Mexico 1970, Argentina 1978, Mexico 1986, United States 1994, Brazil 2014 and the current tournament shared by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
In eight of those editions, the champion was an American team: Uruguay (1930 and 1950), Brazil (1962, 1970 and 1994) and Argentina (1978 and 1986). The only exception came in Brazil 2014, when Germany defeated Argentina in the final and became the first – and so far only – European team to win a World Cup played on American soil.
Twelve years later, the Albiceleste has the possibility of returning the trophy to the continent where the World Cup has historically remained.
The continent fell one by one
Argentina not only survived the demanding direct elimination bracket. He also saw how the rest of the American representatives successively disappeared.
Uruguay was eliminated in the group stage; Ecuador fell in the round of 32; Paraguay surprised by eliminating Germany, but was then eliminated by France; Brazil said goodbye in the round of 16 against Norway; and Colombia fell to Switzerland on penalties.
In Concacaf, the United States, Mexico and Canada also failed to reach the top eight in the tournament, leaving the continent without more representatives.
Europe imposes its weight again
The configuration of the quarterfinals confirms a trend that has been consolidated during the last World Cups.
Europe once again places the vast majority of teams in the decisive phase, while Africa maintains Morocco as its main exponent after repeating the historic performance achieved in Qatar 2022.
Argentina appears as the exception in a table dominated by European teams and with the responsibility of maintaining American prominence.
Much more than defending the title
Lionel Scaloni’s team arrived in North America as current champions after conquering Qatar 2022 and now faces a challenge that transcends the defense of the crown.
If it manages to advance to the final stages, it will not only keep the two-time championship option alive, but it will also try to preserve a historical trend: that the World Cups held in America continue to be won, mostly, by teams from the continent itself.
So far, only Germany has managed to break that tradition at Brazil 2014.
With six European teams, Morocco as the only African representative and Argentina as the last American team in competition, the 2026 World Cup once again raises an old question in international football: Will the continent be able to defend its historic fortress when the World Cup is held on American soil?
