In the rainy season of 2026, the rains have already claimed the lives of 13 people in Guatemala, according to data from the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), which added that one person is missing and 906 emergencies have been attended throughout the country.
According to the information, the victims have died in events related to electrical storms, river flooding, landslides and falling trees.
The departments with the most deaths are Alta Verapaz, with four; Sololá, with two; and Totonicapán, Santa Rosa, Izabal, Guatemala and Escuintla, with one or two victims each.
Among the most recent cases is that of a person who died on July 13 in Cuyuta, Masagua, Escuintla, after a tree fell. There is also the death of three people swept away by a river in Santa María Cahabón, Alta Verapaz.
According to information from Conred, in 2026 there will be 33,052 people affected, almost 14,000 evacuated, more than 1,000 sheltered and 6,494 homes with moderate damage.
Alta Verapaz continues to be the department with the most reported emergencies, with 279 incidents during the rainy season.
