Due to connection problems and the occupation of videoconference rooms in prison centers, Judge Claudette Domínguez postponed the continuation of the intermediate stage hearing of María Marta Castañeda and three alleged gang members from Barrio 18.
According to the authorities, the four face criminal proceedings for an armed attack against the Public Ministry prosecutor Miriam Reguero Sosa, which occurred in March 2024.
In the armed attack, a guard and the prosecutor’s mother died from gunshot wounds.
María Marta Castañeda was captured in the parking lot of a shopping center located in zone 6 of the municipality of Ciudad Vieja, Sacatepéquez.
The evidence collected during the investigation indicates that Castañeda had coordinated the shooting against Reguero, perpetrated on 9th Street. Reforma street and avenue, zone 9, a few meters from the General Diseases Hospital of the Guatemalan Institute of Social Security (IGSS).
That day Carlos Humberto González, 55, the prosecutor’s guard, and Miriam Sosa, 65, the official’s mother, died.
The attack was carried out by four men who wore uniforms similar to those of the National Civil Police (PNC) and fled on motorcycles after the shooting.
Investigations reveal that Castañeda would have acted on the orders of his partner, Aldo Dupié Ochoa Mejía, alias “el Lobo”, leader of the Rueda del Barrio 18.
