Dust from the Sahara will enter Guatemala this July 15: what effects could it cause

According to information from the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), this Wednesday, July 15, a mass of dust from the Sahara Desert is expected to enter the national territory.

According to projections, the largest concentrations will be recorded starting Friday, July 17.

The Insivumeh explained that Sahara dust is a natural phenomenon that occurs when particles of sand and minerals are transported from North Africa to the American continent by atmospheric currents.

This mass of dust will begin to disperse and leave the national territory starting on Thursday, July 23.

During its presence in Guatemala, this phenomenon can favor a warmer environment and reduce air quality, especially in areas where higher concentrations of particles are recorded.

People with respiratory diseases, older adults, girls, boys and pregnant women could be more sensitive to these conditions, so it is important to follow the following recommendations, highlighted the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred).

La Conred shared the following recommendations:

  • Stay informed through the official channels of Insivumeh and Conred.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to open air when a greater presence of particles is perceived.
  • Use a mask if you experience respiratory discomfort or if you do outdoor activities.
  • Go to health services if you have difficulty breathing.
