This July 20, Tom Homan, US border czar, assured that the migrants who have died at the hands of immigration authorities “would be alive” if they had followed the agents’ orders.
Homan’s statements come amid the controversy generated by the death of two men in Maine and Texas after being shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
“It all comes down to one simple fact: these people did not follow the orders of the authorities,” the tsar said during a press conference outside the White House.
“We must always follow the orders of law enforcement. If they had done so, they would be alive today,” Homan added.
The czar also spoke about other incidents linked to ICE, such as the death of two Americans earlier this year in Minnesota at the hands of immigration agents.
“As far as all the mistakes they said happened in Minnesota, I don’t think many of them were really mistakes,” he said.
As already happened after the Minnesota operations, the three deaths that have occurred in recent days have once again highlighted the demands of the Democratic Party and other figures critical of Donald Trump’s Government for immigration agents to use body cameras on a mandatory basis.
In fact, Homan has said that he is in favor of immigration agents having body cameras, since they “facilitate the transparency of operations and exonerate officers 90% of the time.”
“I want the American people to see what an ICE officer sees when they act. And I think this will help ICE combat misinformation in the media,” said the immigration authority.
